課程概述

How to read fiction? Most students seem to feel at ease with this question. They know all they need to do is to read stories and then discuss their themes. Yet is that all? Are the thematic analytical reading techniques we learn from Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren enough for us in understanding fiction? In this semester, students are required to do some close reading of 2 novels to gain an awareness of their scope and variety. Current essays on character and plot, theme and symbol and point of view will also be included.

課程目標
This course is intended to help students become more critical and informed readers, more comfortable with the terminology used across the broad spectrum of English fiction, and more able to apply theoretical concepts in their literary interpretations.
